Purpose
Program handbooks allow students to independently learn about college offerings, navigate programs and understand expectations. Handbooks should accurately reflect college programs and policies. This policy provides a mechanism for program handbook review and quality assurance.

Programs with a need to implement a handbook.

Programs at SPSCC maintaining their own, program-specific handbooks must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Program handbooks should be consistent with current College program requirements, course offerings, and instructional policies as established by Instructional Council
  • Program handbooks will be reviewed by Instructional Council for approval every 3 years, or when there are significant changes, or as required by program accreditation
  • Program handbooks should include the following:
    • The name and description of the program
    • Contact information for the program
    • The years or terms which the handbook covers and revision date
    • A table of contents
    • Descriptions and costs of program-wide tools, uniforms, supplies, and other expenses
    • Program outcomes and performance expectations
    • Certification or licensing information
    • Accreditation information and anything specifically required by the program’s accrediting body
  • Program handbooks may include information on:
    • Safety
    • Sanitation
    • Hygiene
    • Professional standards
    • Other items specific to the program
  • Program handbooks may also point students to supplementary resources including the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, pathways maps, syllabi, advising information, and other College policies and procedures
  • Handbooks are not required to repeat syllabus information, College policies or College codes available to students elsewhere unless deemed necessary
  • Submission of handbooks should be accompanied by documentation of any external handbook requirements from accreditors, etc. when applicable.
