Sensory and Tasting Policy for CBD Students, Staff, and Faculty Policy

1. Sensory Exercises: All sensory exercises at CBD will be led by an instructor and/or approved full-time staff member, students are not permitted to share, consume, or distribute their own alcohol at any time during the In-Person Weekend (IPW).
a. Note on Sample Size: Sensory sample sizes will be determined by SPSCC staff in relation to the sensory exercise undertaken. The following upper limits are in place unless stated otherwise and are in reference to individual students aged 21 or up.
i. Beer/Cider/Mead <= 7%abv – up to 4oz
ii. Beer/Cider/Mead > 7 %abv – up to 2oz
iii. Distilled Spirits <= 50 proof – up to 0.25 oz
iv. Distilled Spirits >50 proof – up to 0.125 oz

2. Permit 15 exceptions: Dependent on annual Class 15 permit approval, students aged 18 through 20 will be admitted into CBD programs if they abide by the guidelines outlined herein.
a. Class 15 permit students will be allowed to participate in a modified version of sensory with the caveat that they do not ingest the sensory materials. The following will outline guidance and volumes distributed.
i. Beer, Cider & Mead – sensory serving of 2 oz. max
ii. Distilled Spirits – drops from a dropper – approximately 0.25ml
b. Spittoons will be issued to each student who will label their vessel with their name and the date. Faculty will periodically inspect (visually) that the amount of fluid in each 18-20 year-old student’s vessel is commensurate with the sensory serving(s).

3. Outside Alcohol: No student will use, possess, manufacture, or distribute alcoholic beverages to another student no matter their age. Students will only serve sensory samples to other students, and only at the direction of an instructor and/or approved full-time staff member during officially sanctioned sensory exercises.
a. NOTE on Homebrew: With instructor approval, and at the direction of a faculty member, students can bring home brew beer and/or cider to a dedicated In-Person Weekend (IPW) sensory event in limited quantities for pre-arranged, faculty curated sensory exercises.
i. Homebrew sensory samples should not exceed 750ml in size. This includes but is not limited to beer/cider/mead.
b. NOTE on Home Distillation: Following federal law, no student is permitted to distill alcohol at their residence without proper Distilled Spirits Plant (DSP) permit(s). Non-regulated/non-registered spirits are prohibited at any SPSCC facilities.

4. Intoxication: Becoming intoxicated is strictly prohibited during any part of the CBD instructional program. Students, staff, and faculty must immediately notify the main course instructor if they feel impaired or unable to safely participate in an officially sanctioned sensory exercise. Students who appear intoxicated, and do not notify their instructor and remove themselves from class, will be removed from class or lab by an instructor or staff member, and may face disciplinary action from the college.

5. Driving under the Influence: SPSCC prohibits any operation of heavy machinery, motor vehicles, or other transportation devices while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Reckless endangerment (WAC 504-26-224) is defined as “engaging in conduct that creates an unreasonable risk of harm to oneself, another person and/or property.” Reckless endangerment includes, but is not limited to, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

6. Violation of college policy, rule, or regulation: Violation of any college policy, rule, or regulation may result in disciplinary action, temporary removal from the CBD program, or further escalation considering the violation that has occurred.

Appeals: Any violation, appeal, or disciplinary action will be determined by the Dean of the program.
